BOREAL CARIBOU OPEN HOUSES

MAY – AUGUST 2017

All Provincial and Territorial governments where Woodland Caribou reside were mandated by the Government of Canada to produce Caribou Range Plans for each individual herd by October 5th 2017. In the Spring of 2017, NWSAR decided to produce a Recommendations Report for Boreal Caribou recovery in Northwest Alberta, and submit it to the Federal and Provincial governments for consideration when they’re developing Caribou Range Plans for the five Boreal Caribou herds within the NWSAR region.

The Committee undertook an extensive review of several policies, plans, legislation, research papers and reports developed over the last three decades, regarding Boreal Caribou. NWSAR also commenced stakeholder and public engagement to gather as much data and perspective from as many people as possible, to inform our Recommendations Report.

Open houses were hosted twice in High Level, AB and twice in Manning, AB. NWSAR provided presentations, informative boards and maps, and hosted question and answer periods. During the August open houses, NWSAR provided representatives from Alberta Wilderness Association (AWA) and Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS) slots to present their perspective on the Boreal Caribou situation.
